The 5 'T's of E-Safety

Parents and Carers

This section is for parents and carers of young people and adults with learning disabilities.

Technology can offer so many opportunities for independence, enjoyment and learning. Being safe on-line is about striking a balance between educating and supporting people to behave safely and trusting them to get on with it.

It is important that you talk to the young person or adult about what technologies they use, what sites they visit and what they would like to do on the Internet. You can then talk about what support they might need and think about rules about what they should and shouldn’t do.

It is also important that they get the same sort of e-Safety message from whoever is supporting them. You may want to talk to the college or place of work or anywhere else they may be using technology and find out what facilities, support and rules they have about using the Internet. Then you and your young person or adult can work out a way forward together.
